Zum Integrationsimperativ im Kontext des ‚Ehegattennachzugs‘ — eine Suche in Marokko
The language certificate for marriage migrants introduced by the grand coalition (CDU/CSU/SPD) federal government in 2007 was constantly criticised in the last years and was recently classified as unlawful by the European Court of Justice. Yet, the federal government maintains this regulation. Within the scope of my doctoral thesis I went to Morocco in order to understand the impact of this language requirement before the entry into Germany. I realized that the issue of integration is omnipresent in responsible institutions like the Goethe-Institute and especially the fear of the non-integration of marriage migrants. But is the aim of the language certificate really integration? Or isn’t this so-called pre-integration measure rather an instrument for a selection at Europe’s external borders?
